Musical Theatre
NPHS VPA musical theatre students participate in double blocked vocal ensemble and musical theatre courses allowing for an extended learning period each day. The voice and diction/ musical theatre courses within the musical theatre double block survey the evolution of music in theatre from ancient Greece to modern Broadway. Musical theater students explore the unique staging and technical demands of musicals in contrast to non-musical plays including acting, vocal performance, dance, non-dance movement, and staging while rehearsing a full-length musical in class. Students in these classes participate in rehearsals for public performances of a well-known musical at least once each year.
The vocal ensemble class within the musical theatre block delivers vocal fundamentals including learning to or improving music reading skills while focusing on vocal technique in solo and ensemble singing as well as singing in a choral setting to establish a good vocal blend within an ensemble. Students in this group will also be invited to participate in additional choral and theatre performances, trips, assessments and program events. Musical theatre students are encouraged to develop their range and to be involved as much as possible, exploring additional acting, dance, technical theatre, and vocal techniques courses.
