Commercial Music
The NPHS VPA commercial music program focuses on modern music and the instruments that make up the typical ‘rock band’, i.e., guitar, bass, keyboard, drum set, and vocalists! Commercial music students focus on their passion for popular music while honing their vocal or instrumental skills. This program encourages students to create modern music with their peers by working in small groups to form their own band and choose their own repertoire. No prior experience is required for these courses, however, due to the diverse and specialized nature of each commercial music instrument (including voice) students wishing to participate in these courses should apply early to ensure enrollment in classes that focus on their first-choice instrument.
As with other music classes at NPHS VPA students will be expected to progress through mastery of basic skills in articulation, tone production, intonation, dynamics, style, rhythmic integrity, and listening skills. Students will typically rehearse with method books, utilizing those to perfect their performance of solos, small and large ensembles. Content includes developing instrumental playing skills, musical literacy, communication skills, and performance skills. All commercial music students perform in end of semester public concerts and at special VPA events throughout the school year.
